winter boots rear facing

I searched but didn't find an answer.

I live in upstate new york where it can snow from halloween to memorial day.

My son is 3 1/2 and I stopped rear facing him because I switched to a sedan from a van and I was wacking heads on door jambs.

I want to rear face him again....but one thing that came to mind was winter. He is going to have to climb into his seat to prevent banging heads. How do you keep winter boots from getting the upholstry on the seats (and him) all muddy, snowy, icy or wet? We had to front face him because he was always getting his seat snowy/wet and then his pants would get wet and he would complain. We tried taking boots off (when we had the van and the space to do it) but it was time consuming, tedious and he hated being sock footed in the car. Invariably, he would step in some small spot of snow and get his socks wet and complain. We also froze in the process because the door was wide open and getting him in and out of his boots was difficult. When it's raining, it's worse, cuz my backside gets soaked.

Carrying him to the car to keep his feet clean is not an option.

So what does everyone in the north do in this situation?

I'd put a towel down under the carseat, and if you can, drape another down the backseat (or one long one from headrest to floor). If you spear that one with the headrest it won't go anywhere. That will keep your car clean, and everything is completely machine washable.

honestly, we just lift kiddo out of her boots and let her climb in that way... no snow in the car except for where I place the boots.. then lift her back into them. I can't stand being wet and assume she wouldn't like it so she just has to deal with me helping her stay dry that way. plus I hate dirty car seats too.
