Help! My son is 15 months old and rear facing. I just got a new job so my husband will be picking him up from daycare in his 2011 Toyota Tacoma access cab. What is the best fitting car seat fit rear facing in the small space?
Hello and welcome. As I'm sure you know, midsize pickups with small 2nd row cabs are notorious for being difficult with car seats. Ultra-compact models like a Combi Coccoro or Cosco Scenera Next are one possibility, though they are smaller and outgrown more quickly than others. Another possibility is to try a larger model that is allowed to be installed more upright for toddlers when rear-facing, such as the Britax Boulevard or Nuna Rava. We are in the process of updating our rear-facing fit guide, but currently it does not include many newer models.
I'm not certain how any of these will fit in your specific vehicle, so the best advice I have for you is to make sure you buy it with a free returns policy, including return shipping costs and sending back a heavy car seat costs a small fortune today. Amazon and Walmart (when sold/shipped by Amazon.com or Walmart) have free returns on most car seats, as do Target and some other stores. Watch out for small baby stores online and third party sellers on Amazon and Walmart platforms, though. Once you receive it, you can also make an appointment with a local child passenger safety technician to make sure it fits correctly.
Get resources on how to find and install the right car seat for your child such as forward-facing and rear-facing car seats, along with booster seats.
