Question outdated carseat

a friend gave me a Cosco car seat-dated 01-16-97. iam wondering if this seat is out of date?

Yes. Between six and eight years out of date, depending on which seat it is.

If you let us know your child's age and weight, and what car you drive, and any budget to work within, we can make recommendations. I'm going to move this to the Canadian forum for you so you get Canadian specific recommendations.

You may also want to gently mention to your friend that it is past the expiry date. If she has children in her care still, it could be that their seats are also out of date.

You can dispose of the expired seat in two ways - either trade it in to TosysRUs, or else strip off the cover, cut it up, break the seat as much as you can and write 'expired, do not use' on the shell. If you can, put it in seperate black garbage bags to put out for pick up.

This helps discourage garbage pickers who would pick an expired seat from the trash heap and use it.

You can even fib and write "Crashed, Do not use" on it. Most people know not to use a crashed seat but there are a lot of people out there who think that expiries are just a marketing gimmick and who would ignore the fact that it is expired.
