I just wrote and emailed this letter to our local sherriff's dept.
I am writing to inform you of what I just witnessed. One of your uniformed officers just put his son in danger. I just witnessed a uniformed K9 officer pick up his two year old child from daycare in *****, and place him in the front seat of his cruiser with no child restraint, placing the shoulder belt behind the child. Placing the child in the front seat in front of an active airbag in a seat belt with the shoulder belt behind him is dangerous and illegal.
Oklahoma state law requires all children under 6yrs or 60lbs to be restrained in an appropriate restraint. Your officer not only broke the state law, he put his child in great danger. As a public servant, he should be expected to be a role model for the citizens of our community.
It doesn't matter if the officer lived around the corner from the daycare, accidents can happen anywhere at anytime. He is not immune to the law. He is not immune to the laws of physics. Had he been involved in an accident on his way home, his child would have likely been killed.
I am a certified car seat technician trained in proper installation and use of child restraints. I have seen a lot of 'misuse', but his complete disregard for his child's safety is appalling.
