My ds is 5 (he will turn 6 in February) and is currently riding in a GN in harness mode using latch to install. Is there a weight limit for the latch system? He is currently around 41 pounds and I drive a 01 mercury villager.

yes, latch has weight limits, which vary by vehicle manufacturer. according to the new latch manual Mercury's Latch limit is 48, weight of child only. So for now you can keep him installed with latch, just be sure to keep an eye on his weight, and remember to weight him fully clothed wearing shoes.

I want to suggest that you try the seatbelt install before you need to so that if you go out one day and the munckin is at the limit it won't be hard for you to do it in a pinch.
