Carseat for dog!

If the large crates can shatter then what's a good idea for a large dog that doesn't do well unless in a crate? Are there soft sided crates for dogs that weigh 120+??

For a small dog or cat, I'd think it would be acceptable to put the crate on the floor behind one of the seats, you know, that nice little containment area.

Larger animals should be buckled directly, with a harness.

Oh, and I think with a nice barrier, it would be fine to keep a dog in the cargo area. By "nice" I mean a real barrier designed to keep the occupants of the car safe from the cargo. In a crate would be better back there, just scoot it up to the seat backs since statistically, crashes cause things to fly forward more often than back.

We have an odyssey and the crate is so big that it has to be against the back of the second row seats. It takes up the entire cargo area from the door to the seats!! I don't think I would have room to put any kind of barrier up and still fit the crate in. As it is we can barely open the crate door far enough for him to get in because of that plastic piece on the back!

Small animals
IMMI "petbuckle" or RuffRider
soft carrier (what I call a doggy bag, LOL)
cargo barrier from vehicle manufacturer

Large animals
IMMI "petbuckle" or RuffRider
cargo barrier from vehicle manufacturer

My pitbulls were ~45# using the IMMI in vehicle seats & cargo area without barrier
My parents' Rottweiler & Newfoundland were 100+ pounds using RuffRiders in cargo area with barrier
My parents' cat uses a soft carrier positioned on the backseat floor or bunjee'd in the cargo area

So for my Rottie the IMMI petbucke or Ruffrider would be okay attached to a LATCH anchor in the cargo area??? I would like to not get a barrier.

Okay - I resisted long enough I have to post my 1st baby with Ryan at 4 months old:D

I used the tie down hooks in my Blazer because there wasn't any other option with 3 kids & the center seatbelt being lap only (biggest kid had to sit up front & I couldn't focus on the road with both dogs between my girls) -- my parents use the top tether anchors + manufacturer's barrier ... if you don't have a barrier* then I'd use the seatbelt with large dogs: which is why my dogs both sat in the front seat in my Escape with all 3 kids in the rear (when I was finally able to trade the Blazer in). Does this make sense? I might not be very clear right now so just tell me if I'm not!

I love your pic, too, BTW :D I really miss my old Rotty Samsam :( She was very human-like (as were my Pits! :))

* Remember that pressure mounted barriers can shatter, becoming projectiles itself.

So I can't get the IMMI restraint and hook it to the tether for the third row of my Pilot (the seats would be down so he would be in the cargo area)???? I would rather not have him on the seats.

And I won't get the barrier things....I don't think it would work anyway once I turn Ryan forward facing it would interfere with the tether (even the ones by the car manufacturer).

I had no problems with having my dogs on the front seat with a seat cover + chew toy, but if you will only let your dog ride in the cargo area & a barrier will interfer with carseat installation, then using the LATCH anchors (tether) would be better than nothing! Some of the vehicle manufacturer barriers still allow easy/correct use of carseats, but they can be expensive.

Did your dogs sit on the seat???? I just can't picture Amadeus sitting in the front seat???? and next to Ryan isn't going to work.
