Would you let a child ride on a Vespa/scooter?

We just recently got a Vespa type scooter. My husband thinks our daughter (21 months) would have fun riding on it with him in our neighborhood. If she did it, she would stand between him and handle bars and would wear a helmet. I know he wouldn't go very fast with her, probably a max of 15 mph. Would you allow this? I'm really not thrilled about the idea but I know in Europe and Bermuda, kids ride on scooters like that all the time.

Oh gosh no, even if your dh drives it well you don't know that someone else might cause an accident, and that age is very wiggly and unpredictable for my comfort :-/

Umm standing like that? No way. I'm probably more on the liberal side of things like this in general, my kids ride on four wheelers all the time with my dad and my husband just going up and down the street and staying within our subdivision and I don't see anything wrong with that. But without a way for someone to actually hold a child that is physically sitting on the ride on and expecting a little kid to stand and not loose balance I wouldn't be comfortable with it.

No way, no how.

My 7 year old has his own dirt bike that he's allowed to use anytime he wants. (On our property.) DH has been asking me to let DS ride on DH's motorcycle with him "just around the neighborhood" and I haven't agreed yet. Maybe next summer? DS has plenty of gear (a real helmet, not a simple bicycle helmet) and our neighborhood is very quiet. No yellow lines, a couple speed bumps, etc. DS just lacks impulse control and I wouldn't be surprised if he jumped off while in motion if he got scared.
But there isn't a chance in hell that I'd give a baby a Vespa ride. IMO, playing with bubbles is just as fun at that age. :p

There is no way. My 9 yr old has an electric scooter. He just got that at 8 yrs old. Lots of rules and no street riding unless we are with him and he wears a helmet.

A child that age is not missing anything by not riding. No way I would allow that.

That was my thinking exactly! I think my husband likes to think that our child is extraordinarily advanced or something. I love her to death but she's not. Thanks ladies!

If it helps convince him, not only do I think it's not safe, if I saw a neighbor or whatever doing that with a toddler I'd call the police and report it. I bet others would, too. He may not want to deal with that aspect as well. Hopefully he will listen to reason without much pushback, bit this would be one of those "over my dead body" mama moments for me if it came right down to it. Good luck!

Yea he's pretty amenable on this kind of stuff so I'm not worried about it. He just thought she would think it was fun because she's kind of a thrill seeker. Thanks ladies!

You've already gotten lots of responses, but I'll add mine. No way.

The ONLY way I would allow that would be in a life-or-death situation in which there was no other choice (such as having to escape a charging bear or something in the even that the scooter could actually travel faster than the bear). Seeing that the above situation is highly unlikely, I'd say no way.
