Question Which convertible seat would fit in a 3 door SC2 Saturn?

We have a 1999 3 door SC2 Saturn which does not have a middle seat in the rear. Baby is due in 2 months. Instead of buying an infant car seat, we are thinking of a convertible seat so that we can use it longer. Thinking of buying a bigger vehicle maybe in a year or so.

My questions are:-

1. First of all, can a newborn be placed in a convertible?

2. Any ideas of which convertible seat brands would fit in our tiny car?

Thanks

Hi and welcome!
Newborns can ride in most convertibles but some are more realistic than others for achieving a really good newborn fit. (A few convertibles will actually state something like for ages 6months and up - if so avoid those!)

I'm also considering going straight to a convertible for my baby due in May, and convertibles I've heard recommended for newborns include the Scenera Next, the Combi Coccoro, the Chicco Nextfit, and the Maxi-Cosi Pria 70 WITH the "Tiny Fit" insert (only certain Pria models come with the Tiny Fit.) There are others good for newborns as well, but those are the ones I'm looking into.

Here is a great comprehensive post on this website's blog that helps explain how much room RF convertibles will leave for front seat passengers. Check it out and feel free to ask more questions!

One thing to remember is that a convertible car seat needs to be reclined to a 45 degree angle (the most reclined they will go) for a newborn. This often makes them pretty long from front to back.
Several of the convertibles can be installed at a more upright angle but only for an older baby. The blog post mentions this in it's comparisons between different seats.

One advantage of the Pria with TinyFit is that the insert is more reclined than the main shell of the seat. This means the seat can be installed more upright than some other convertibles for a newborn, which could be very valuable in your case! It actually has a single recline line, which is only appropriate for older babies and toddlers if the TinyFit insert is not used. On the other hand, the insert makes the seat a bit more complicated to use at times. I think Carseatblog.com has a review that goes over the details.

Just found this video that shows the back seat for a while starting at 3:30. http://youtu.be/xu-d5BzaN14

Looks like the shape of the seats and buckle locations could be a challenge too. Maybe someone can speak to that more directly, as I've never had to contend with that sort of setup myself.

Yes! That's our car exactly. The middle portion is not gonna work. We are planning on fitting the car seat behind my seat (the passenger seat) as I'm just 5ft 4" and I don't need a lot of leg room.

I was looking at the Maxi Cosi Pria with Tiny fit car seat but am wondering whether it will fit on that seat behind me.

Any further info will be appreciated.
