When to replace seatbelts?

We are finding ourselves in need of a "new" car but we are on a seriously tight budget. When is it recommended to change seatbelts, and how much does that generally cost? DH wants to consider cars as far back as the 90s/early 00's but I'm afraid of that added cost.

If you inspect the seatbelts and they look good, you should be fine. We have a 1998 Ford Escort and have never given any thought to replacing the seatbelts.

That makes it easier! For some reason I thought I remembered them having an expiration

My DH drives a 1990 F-150 and those seat belts also show no real signs of the wear of 22 years that car has been around. I was even able to get rock solid installs of a Cosco Scenera and a First years True Fit (minus some button and lock off issues, stupid button) in that truck.
