Question Want to make sure locking clip not needed

Just got a sureride as a secondary convertible. It will be installed rear facing in a 2008 subaru outback. We don't love the outboard latch install (I can't seem to get it tight enough, plus it leaves no room for the front passenger), so I was going to do a center install with the seat belt (I know Subaru discourages center seat installs, but it has worked fine with our keyfit and our nextfit--both installs checked by techs I trust). Based on the manual instructions, it sounds like I don't need to use a locking clip, but just wanted to make sure since I'm still a newbie at all of this... Here's what the manual says...

"Pull out the seatbelt fully from the retractor to change the retractor over from the Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) to the Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) function. Then, allow the belt to rewind into the retractor. As the belt is rewinding, clicks will be heard which indicate the retractor functions as ALR."

So...locking clip not needed if I follow these directions, correct?

Thanks in advance!

Correct, you do not need a locking clip.

Eta: if you notice that the seat begins to tip to one side (the buckle side), you may revisit the use of the locking clip. Sometimes the retractor continues to pull slack from the shoulder and creates a tilt. If this happens, you can use the locking clip instead of the switchable retractor (retractor that can be switched from elr to alr by pulling all the way out). As long as the install is still acceptable, you can continue to use just the retractor.
