Sadly, sometimes even carseats are not enough...Warning - sad

I don't know if "in the back seat" of the minivan meant literally in the 3rd row. A lot of people generally refer to any part of the back of a van or SUV as the "back seat". Then again, if they had the type where you could totally remove the 2nd row, they may *have* had all 3 in the 3rd row, for the space and ease of managing 3 small children and their buckles & straps. :shrug-shoulders:

I'm still sick about this. Putting my girls to bed last night, it just overwhelmed me. Holding their warm, safe, sleeping bodies, ... and I felt bad thinking "I'm so glad it wasn't my kids." It could have happened to Anybody. That mother and father and grandmother are in agony. I think I would die of grief.

Not that we can control everything, but I agree with the idea of leaving a gap in a traffic jam.

I actually thought that white thing between the front seats looked like a carseat base, personally. Which made me wonder if the seatbelts stayed latched during this accident since the 3rd doesn't have LATCH...

It's too bad we can't have detailed pictures of every accident to somehow reassure ourselves that it won't happen to us.

However, I have on more than one occasion gone off the road to avoid getting rear ended. One time by a semi... I didn't drive for a week I was so scared. I actually moved out of the way of a big huge ford truck once, and it rear ended the car in front of me... crushed it up to the front seat. It was horrible. I am totally paranoid and I always leave room to escape regardless of the road I'm on. But it doesn't do any good if you don't see it coming.

I can hardly see my screen to be able to type. What a horrific tragedy.
Scares me as my 5yo rides in the 3rd row of our Yukon XL. Makes me want to just let the boys fight sitting next to eachother in the 2nd row.
My prayers go out to the family.

Yeah, I don't think anything carseat wise would've protected those poor kids :( Maybe some sort of steel/iron cage, but short of that... I doubt it would have mattered if the kids were rf'ed, ff'ed, in Britaxs, or loose in the car for *this* accident. (Not implying at all that I think kids SHOULD be loose in the car.)

This makes me positively ill :( That poor family. I cannot even begin to imagine. It actually makes me reconsider having a 3rd child and having to move someone to the 3rd row of our van.
My dad tells me (he's a truck driver) that car drivers are constantly cutting him off without enough room for him to stop safely. He leaves giant cushions of space in front of him, only to have cars zip in there and fill them up. He wishes people knew how long it takes to stop a semi - but most people don't ever think about it.
My dad was a big-rig driver before retirement too and said the same thing.
