Regent LATCH Install question (new straps)

I finally got around to installing the new LATCH straps on one of the Regents. I had both of them installed SBP but DS only weighs 34lbs and I get a better install with LATCH.

So I opened up the latch extender kit I got in the mail.

I am doing it step by step (like any good car seat owner- LOL). Well I pulled and pulled and disconnected the old strap. The black plastic thingy that connected to teh seat holding in the old LATCH straps snapped apart. It broke in half. I am not sure if it was suppose to come completely off or just break. I then pushed the new rivet connector into the hole of the new LATCH straps. I have tried several ways to get that rivet connector into the hole and I cant get it right! Do I need that black plastic thing that broke? ARGH. I am so frustrated right now. It seemed like this would be totally easy and now my arms hurt from pulling and my hands hurt from pushing. What in the world am I doing wrong???
