Hi,

I recently got the 2014 Lexus RX 350 and already had a clek foonf for my daughter who just turned 2 and is 31 lbs And 35.5 inches. I have her installed with latch behind the passenger seat. My goal is to have her rear face as long as possible, with the install how long can that be?

Reading that the limit is 25 lbs made me super concerned that I have had her in the seat incorrectly for so long. I dug out the car seat manual and it says the latch limit is 40 lbs rear facing. I also looked in my lexus manual and there was no mention of weight restrictions. Is the 25 lbs a lexus thing?

New LATCH regulations were introduced last year. They basically limit LATCH to 65 lbs (weight of child plus seat). Some vehicles have retroactively changed their LATCH limits to reflect that, although I believe Lexus defers to the child restraint manufacturer.

If your car seat was manufactured before February 27, 2014, which it sounds like yours was, you can use the information included with your seat and disregard the new limits. I would note, though, that in federal testing, there were some instances of lower anchors in cars failing with as little as 70-something pounds of combined weight. I don't say that as a scare tactic, but more as a reason to consider that the new limits aren't necessarily arbitrary.
