Long belt path w/ LATCH on Regent

I woke up last night in the middle of the night and realized that I never switched the LATCH belt path on our Regent when I started using it on little bro (21 mo., 34.5 lbs., 35 ") - d'oh! When big bro was using this seat, I went by the old standards and never had to worry about this long belt path business. Does anyone else find the install weird and akward? The tails of the LATCH belt end up being sqeezed on the carseat side, if that makes any sense. I still got a solid install in my '02 Mazda MPV (lemon - major $$ in repairs PITA vehicle) but I didn't like it, and just don't feel quite right about it.

I hate it and refuse to use it that way. No one in the world will convince me that it is a safe and okay thing for the belt to route under the bar at that angle. The bar needs to be redesigned if it's going to work like that. I choose to go against the instructions (not advocating this at all), and use SBP with the recline bar under forty pounds. I know it's safe for over forty pounds, so there is no reason it shouldn't be safe for less than.
