Kids on a city bus/public transit

I've searched and can't seem to find a good answer.

What to do with kids when traveling on a city bus or other form of public transit? The car seat -- if someone is even traveling with one (infant carrier on a stroller?) can't be installed. Is it best to keep it on the stroller and lock the stroller wheels? Is it preferred to take the car seat off the stroller and sit it/wedge it on the seat? What about kids in strollers only and no car seat?

Is it better to sit in the forward facing or rear facing seats, if there's a choice, compared to the side-facing seats?

I realize that crashes in this type of vehicle are comparatively rare and minor compared to in cars, but what is the best way to minimize 'projectile' injuries when traveling in this way?

Where I live, strollers need to be folded/collapsed on public transit.

I always wore/carried DS when riding transit.

From a looooong time New Yorker, no car seat is required or possible on public busses or trains. Just bring a small light stroller that can be easily folded and have fun!

It's not for me - more in general, and especially for people who walk with a stroller and take the bus. Where I live we don't have to fold strollers, so there are people with gigantic jogging strollers or travel systems.

Here in Italy we have a dedicated stroller/wheelchair area on the bus. Everyone just fits in however but there are actually instructions on which direction to face and to use the seatbelt thing to secure the stroller or wheelchair. Realistically no one uses the seatbelt thing.

I think I missed something in your question. Why do you need the carseat on the bus/train? Will you need the carseat at your destination? I've taken streetcars, buses, subways & trains with my kids & unless there is a designated stroller parking area you collapse it. As for a carseat, if you need it at your destination you'd easily store it on a proper train or coach bus but it'd be a tight squeeze, other than a bucket,on municipal bus/subway/streetcar. On a side note if at all possible take a non rush hour trip to give you extra room
