Just called Graco RE: the Nautilus

I called Graco just now with two concerns;

1. The positioning of the headrest when the child is in the top harness slots.

2. the crotch strap that is always underneath DS's bottom, no matter what he's wearing or how far back in the seat he is.

THEIR RESPONSE:

1. The red slots on the headrest are for use with the seat belt. The picture in the instructions and on the side of the seat are for when the child is using the vehicle belt. I told the rep that with the seat belt it was no problem. However, when the child is in the top slots with the harness then the head rest is laying no top of the harness straps. In order to prevent that then the headrest needs to be adjusted to a much higher height therefore not providing maximum side impact protection.
She said that she didn't know what to say about that and that she would forward it to the designers. I told her it was a bit deceiving to say that it could harness a child to 65 lbs but in reality they wouldn't be receiving maximum protection if we did so. She then said that if I didn't think that I could get the correct usage of the seat then to return it.

2. With regards to the crotch buckle, she said they could send me another one. That there was a chance that it was improperly cut. I told her that I don't see how that had anything to do with it. That yet again it was another design flaw. The actual opening for the crotch buckle was under him and I didn't see how getting a longer strap would make a difference.

In the end, nothing was resolved and I think I'm returning the seat.

I know the headrest issue has been discussed.

It's okay if the slot for the buckle is under him. It's fine as long as it isn't in front of him. The crotch strap needs to angle forward or go straight down (/ or | rather than \). It shouldn't angle back because that can allow him to slump or slide forward in a crash. Under him is only a problem if he's uncomfortable and hopefully they'll have a longer strap to fix that.
