He everyone!! i am going on driving trip and we need to use a pick up truck that has no back seat. Its a bigger truck, and on the newer side, not sure what year. Its very spacious, but Im not sure if it is really safe for my son. He is 6 years old about 50 lbs.and in a booster seat, no back. I was going to put him in the middle spot (since there are 3 of us travelling). There is only a lap belt. I will turn off the air bag on the passanger side but I was just a little worried if that was safe. Since it is only a lap belt. Is this safe for him?

Thanks everyone for your help!!

Overly worried mom,
Kelly

No, he can't sit there. Nor can you. If you have a harnessed seat for him you can put him in the middle. That's the only safe option to get three people in this vehicle.

I would probably have him in a high back booster for full time, since he's still young. It'll just position the shoulder belt better in all cars, provide him head support in case he sleeps, and have shell around him to remind him to hold still. But in front of an airbag or dash I would do backless to move him back.

Does the center spot have a top tether? If so, a Ride Safer Travel Vest is an option. If you let us know the year, make, and model of the truck we can look up that information.

But short of a harness or vest, no, there's no way to transport three people safely across that bench.

Glad you're taking your car. The Chase has a 40 pound harness limit, so that wouldn't have worked anyway. And it doesn't make a good booster.
