Cosco Scenera Next UGH

We have a 2011 Honda Odyssey, which my kids ride in most of the time (Grandma watches them while I'm at work). The oldest, who is 6 and weighs nearly 40 pounds, is harnessed in a Britax Pinnacle. The middle, who is 3 and weighs about 30 pounds, is FFing in a Chicco NextFit. The youngest, who is 8 months, is in a Chicco KeyFit. Grandma is tired of carrying the infant seat and is ready for us to buy a convertible seat. We ordered two Cosco Scenera Nexts (one for her van and one for my car) but we could not get a solid install in the Odyssey. I blame the leather seats, but I tried to install it, my husband tried, we used LATCH, we used the seatbelt, and we just couldn't get a good fit. I guess we're too spoiled by the super easy installs on the Pinnacle and the NextFit. So we're going to return both Sceneras and buy a NextFit Zip for the Odyssey. Unless someone wants to talk me into something cheaper but with a super easy install? I hate to pay $350 when the Scenera Next is $45! We will also need a convertible for my Mazda5 at some point. Is it worth trying the Scenera Next in there? At least the seats aren't leather!

Since your 3 yr old is ff why not pass that NextFit down to baby and get a new ff only seat for that child?

Honestly? Because I HATE removing the cover on the NextFit to clean it and I really want a Zip. :p I know, terrible. The Zip came out within a few months of us buying our NextFit and we would have waited had we known!

Anyway, can you recommend a FFing seat that installs easily but maybe isn't as pricy as the Pinnacle and NextFit? I really want a no-rethread harness.

Out of curiosity, what troubles are you having installing the NEXT? Getting the right recline? Tightening?

EVERYTHING! And this from the mom who installed two seats in the third row of a Mazda5 while hugely pregnant. :p We couldn't get a tight install at the belt path, there was definitely more than an inch of movement. And the seat kept slipping recline-wise. Baby is 8 months so the seat could be more upright than reclined but we couldn't get it to stay in any position. The manual recommended a pool noodle or tightly rolled towel but even that didn't help. The seat just felt flimsy.

I really like our Argos/Nautilus seats. The new Nautilus has no-rethread harness and super tall, skinny 3 year old loves it. I like that I can get the recline to match the seat angle in any seat. It doesn't have the premium LATCH, but I have done both a LATCH install and a seatbelt install in multiple vehicles and it's always solid as a rock.

I like our Harmony Defender too, but if it is in your budget, the Graco seats are steel reinforced and easier to install in my opinion.

Which seating position are you trying to put the NEXT in? I had it in the +1 with leather seats, and it was great. Maybe I can give you tips?

I haven't tried it in my Mazda5. Why do we have exactly the same vehicles?? [emoji6]

Would a Graco Argos be a good choice? It's only $50 more than the Securekid at Buy Buy Baby (I have gift cards) and it's got the no-rethread harness.

I don't have experience with the Argos, but I think I would try it out at BBB and see what you think. The hook-style LATCH is a turn-off for me, but if the seatbelt install is easy then I am sure it would be a good option.

Can grandma just leave the KeyFit in the car and use it like a convertible? I'd probably try to squeak a few more months of use out of the KeyFit and then hopefully the oldest will be a full 40 lbs. At that point, I'd booster the oldest (Parkway SGL is what my oldest has been in for almost a year now right when he turned 6), Pinnacle to middle child, and then NextFit to baby (you can buy the Zip cover from Chicco).
