I had an 01 Elantra and it had side impact air bags. Anyways, if yours does I would recommend not bracing but I'm not a tech.

You'll need to read your vehicle owner's manual. Usually the information about touching the front passenger seat is in the child restraint section.

Many new(er) cars have sensors for front, curtain and/or side airbags and DON'T allow CRs to brace.

At check events, we recommend being able to slide your hand between the CR and the seat back. One "trick" to give a passenger more room is to adjust the seat back more upright. This gives a big boost of room for the CR but doesn't affect the passenger much. [It is also a bit safer for the passenger as it puts him/her closer to the seat belt - less space, less movement.]
