Baby in a marathon

I have a 4 month old who's main seat is a chicco keyfit. My hubby's truck seat is weird and the only seat I have found that fits 100% on the seat when rearfacing is a marathon. The problem is my little guy doesn't fit well in the seat. Our marathon expires this month :( I need to get a new seat but I don't want to buy a marathon now if he can't ride in it for another few months.

When I put him in the seat the harness straps have too much slack when they are tightened all the way. Is this typical? I thought the rf weight limit starts at 5 lbs. My little guy is almost 13 pounds. Is there an infant insert that can be used?

The new Marathon 70 is way different, fits wee babes a lot better (lower bottom slots). Are you sure the harness isn't getting stuck on something in the back? Have you taken the HUGS off? The harness *should* tighten enough even if he's below the bottom slots right now (lots of us are very comfortable using a big convertible with a small baby, since the lap straps and the tall shell and the child's light weight will prevent ramping out of the seat).

I have a classic marathon. I'll have to double check to make sure the straps aren't getting caught on anything - but I'm pretty sure it is tightened all the way and the harness is still too loose.

I would be VERY surprised if any 4 month old fit correctly in a classic MA. My daughter didn't even fit in it when she was 8 months old.

Just go ahead and get yourself a new generation seat since yours expires soon anyways. They will fit newborns even, so it should be no problem at all.

It depends entirely on the kid. My DD fit at 6 weeks. That's unusual, but not unheard of.

I know it depends on the kid, but my small DD2, with a short torso, is in a Roundabout 50 (same shell as the classic MA). At 2 years and 8 months, she is still on the first setting for the harness. Yes, she fits in it, but she did not fit in it until way past 1. So hearing about a 4 month old fitting in it makes me wonder. But I do have small kids, so anything large seems unreal to me.

My now 7 year old fit in a classic MA at birth, torso height of 10 inches :p
Rare, but not unheard of.
ETA, now that I actually read the original post, the fit of a next gen Britax should be great for a 13lb 4m old.
