Air Travel (Delta) with Nautilus

We are traveling via Delta this month. My 5.5 year old is still in the Nautilus (5pt). I cannot decide if its best to gate check the seat or take it on the plane with me. I worry about damage to the seat by checking it, but its also so heavy and bulky I am not sure if I want to manage that mess. Thoughts? Thanks!

Take it on board. If you check it, destroy it before you use it as it's considered crashed and unsafe.

Well, when a carseat is crashed you can't use it anymore, it's not safe. But if you just put it in the trash someone else may take it and use it. So we say to destroy crashed or expired seats. Grace requires replacement after any crash. If you check it it's considered crashed, and cannot be used.

It doesn't count toward a carry on.

This is why she and I would consider it crashed:

I would take it on board and use it. It doesn't count as a carry-on.

Is the nautilus the only seat you have for the 5y? How big is she? Would you consider a booster?

Ok. I understood about replacing it and destroying it, I was just confused how that played into this.

He is 5.5 years old, 45 lbs and 46 inches tall.

Wendy meant that if you check it, you should consider it crashed and therefore destroy it.

Most children at his age and size should be fine in a booster. If you don't want to bring the Nautilus, you could buy a booster like the Graco Turbo Booster for the trip and keep it to use for a spare seat. If you go the Turbo route, you can bring the backless portion on board as a carry-on (belt positioning boosters aren't FAA approved, but you would still have it if your luggage is lost) and pack the high back portion padded with clothes in a suitcase.
