advice needed

my in-laws watch my 6 month old approx. 4 days a week at my house, but they sometimes take him out on drives or errands. I need to get an inexpensive convertible car seat. I have the Britax Marathon 70 convertible car seat for my car - which he is in most of the time. But I need another one that they can utilize in their car when they need to. The catch...they have super OLD volvo (like late 90's model)...it doesn't have the LATCH system, so I need something that is still extremely safe for my little guy, but won't break the bank as it is the supplemental seat, as i said he's in my car most of the time.

any advice? thanks!

I'm sure a tech can offer better advice based on your car model but the Scenera is probably your most budget friendly option. All car seats must meet the same safety standards. It often requires some towels or pool noodles to get it to the correct 45 degree angle, although some people don't stress about getting it quite that reclined for a child with good head control. Once you get used to getting it built up to that angle, I find it super easy for a seat belt install. I would imagine based on the year of your car that your seat belts don't lock, so you would need a locking clip.
There are some other budget friendly car seats out there, but the Scenera is your cheapest option.

The Cosco Scenera, or Cosco Apt. Maybe the Safety 1st onSide Air. All great budget seats. I put an Apt in a 1990 Volvo 240 last week. The side seatbelts don't lock, so we used a locking clip, but the middle belt was a lap belt only and that went in easily enough. We did use a pool noodle to get the correct angle.
