Is there head rest support to the tops of his ears? I'm having difficulty determining what I'm seeing due to shadows in the picture.

The shoulder and lap belt fit are fine.

The first picture is the high back mode.

In the van when I use it without the back there is no head rest unless I move the headrest of the van up. I think he seems to have a little bit left when using the back of the booster.

I think he is almost outgrowing the back. I actually took the back off and he fits pretty good but I was concerned about not having a good back rest in the van for his head. Does that make sense?

Yes, that's why I was asking earlier. You MUST have the vehicle head rest raised to at least the tops of his ears, to use it in backless mode, or to sit without a booster.
