I have a car seat that I bought second hand from family members. The manufacturing date in february 1999. Is it still safe to use this car seat. For how long can I use this car seat before replacing it?

Yep, as Kashi said, it's expired and no, it's not safe to use it. If money is tight, you can get a brand new seat at Wal-Mart, called the Cosco Scenera (w/ 5 pt. harness, NOT overhead shield), it goes from 5-35 lbs. rear-facing and to 40 lbs. forward-facing.

Not safe. As in don't use it again, go directly to a store and buy a new one.

How old is the child and what is their weight and torso height (if they're sitting it's the floor to their shoulder height) and what is the car you drive. Do you have a budget?

Not to contradict anyone, but if it is a fisher price, it would have 2 months left before expiring. Even so, I would get to the store quick and get a scenera for $40 and ask your family for your money back! If they are charging you for an 8 year old seat, they might not be telling the truth about how it's been cared for or if it's been in an accident.

Graco told me that Century seats have a ten year from DOM expiry date and Graco has six years. So doesn't it depend on the seat?

Good point! While most seats have a 6 year expiration, not all do!
