I know your opinion is in demand here, but I'm hoping you can answer this one pretty quickly.

What's your view on rear side airbags (the hip/leg ones, not the curtains) in cars that carry kids in restraints in outboard positions? Assuming that the bags meet the standards for out of position occupants, do you see them as an important safety feature? Or are they still a potential hazard?

Thanks!

I traded a perfectly good 2001 minivan in for a 2006 to get side curtain airbags and stability control, if that is any indication.

I doubt they are very beneficial for rear facing infant seats. More for front facing and probably significant for kids in boosters.

I don't know that side impact airbags have ever been identified as a safety hazard for any passengers. There was some caution because of the early issues with frontal airbags, but so far it has not shown to be a concern. As long as you follow the recommendations about placement near airbags in the owners' manuals, I would recommend that they are a very important safety feature.

Thanks!

Thanks! Audi and Volkswagon offer them as an option on some cars (rear side curtain airbags are standard), but Volvo and Subaru have only the curtains in the rear. Just can't decide if that's worth the extra $ for an Audi! (I will have FF kids outboard in Roundabouts/Marathons and one eventually in a BPB.)

I'm sorry, I didn't read your first message carefully enough. I can't say if it's worth extra for torso airbags in the back seat in addition to curtain airbags. The IIHS studies have generally touted the head protection curtain/tubular airbags as the ones that have been very successful at preventing injuries.
