I know we had an earlier thread about this and a bunch of people were interested in taking the class, so I wanted to start a new thread where everyone would see that they have now set a date for this class.

The class will be WEDNESDAY, Oct. 22/08 from 8am to 5pm at Langley Township Fire Hall. Which is kind of funny because I could walk there from my house in less than 10 minutes. It costs $75 and gives you a PROVINCIAL (not national) certification as a CRST.

A couple of us are already signed up so I just wanted to spread the news in case anyone else decides to go for it as well.

You can view the course listing on the Justice Institute website here: http://www.jibc.bc.ca/search/index....e=09/01/2008&EndDate=09/30/2008&Submit=Search

It is the second one, course FC176. If you click on that a window pops up and inside that new window click on course offerings and it now has the date listed.

I'm SO excited! Allport has kindly attested to the instructors' knowledge and qualifications so I'm feeling good about that. I can just imagine what this class is going to be like if a bunch of "us" end up being in it together. We'll be the most passionate, knowledgable students she's ever had!

while i do not want to take the class, i love hearing that there will be more tech on the lower mainland. Wondering if anyone will be offering independent inspections. I would gladly pay to have someone come and make sure we have our seats installed correctly in our car. I find it so hard to get to the car seat clinic.

Some efforts have been made to offer check events at a variety of times in other locations, but for some reason here in the Lower Mainland they all seem to be during the day. It does make it difficult for people who are only available in the evenings. Lots of technicians do provide private checks, free of charge, myself included. I'm in Delta.

Certified techs that generally get paid for their work, generally work for other agencies. Eg. health nurses, firemen, police, and in the case of BC, the BCAA techs are paid. But, for the most part, we do this because we're passionate about child passenger safety.

Do certified techs get paid for checks? How do you making a living? Is this volunteering and you get warm fuzzies inside?

It's all about the warm fuzzies. I can't wait for lots and lots of warm fuzzies. For me its also about having some credibility to back me up when I'm talking to friend's, relatives, etc., about the importance of properly restraining their children.

Just out of curiosity, how do they teach the whole course in one day? When I took mine in August, it was three very full days...I can't imagine having to process all that info in one day!

Another member from hear asked the instructor and on the JI website it lists it as a "blended" course, meaning that they send you the course material a couple weeks ahead of time and you're supposed to read it and then its reviewed at the class and then you write a test. That's all I know. Maybe Allport knows, because she knows the lady who made the course curriculum.
