Portland, OR has a place for recycling car seats

Some of you know that I have been trying to find a place to recycling car seats. I thought I had one, Garten, but then I got an email saying that whomever I talked to, was mistaken. I was pretty bummed. But now, I really found a place.

Legacy Health Systems

I have emailed the guy in charge, and he confirmed that they destroy and recycle. He is still looking for a group to recycle the fabric, but everything else, is being recycled. So, good bye to my pile of car seats. Good bye freeway, kangaroo and sit n stroll. No longer do I have to burn up car seats in house fires, run over them with my truck or pound them with a sledge hammer......unless I really want to, of course!

You're right he's very nice and very helpful!

He'll take them at legacy salmon creek (vancouver) and to anyone that's interested they do a seat exchange every year at the Healthy Childrens Fair.

Thanks again for the info!

Hmmm, I need something like that where I live. My father-in-law wants me to try and sell a seat for him at our garage sale this weekend, but I told him, I wouldn't even give it away. It needs to go to the dump!

Dropoff carts scare me. What is stopping someone from "dumpster diving"? The whole point of us hoarding these seats is to keep them out of the hands of people who don't know not to use them. I hope that their car is manned in some way.:twocents:
That being said, I'm all for recycling programs. We recently established one here with our local recylers, and if we bring in a bunch, they cut us a check for $25. Not much, but it's something for the team.

Legacy @ Salmon creek Vancouver is having a similar event June 14th - I will post all of the details when I get them. I know that Legacy is also working towards 4 permanent drop off sites, but they are working out the details to ensure that they can be handled properly. More details to follow:)

do you know where we can find carseat recycling facilities in other parts of the country?

Crunchier, all we did locally was contact the recycling center and ask us if they would take them. They separate the plastic, fabric and metal, and recycle what they can. Right now the fabric goes to the landfill, but the do destroy the seats immediately. The guy who took the first batch in got to throw them into a pit and watch a lot of the older ones break. Before he left they were already going after them with the tractor.

Legacy is committed to ensuring that there will be no dumpster diving when their drop off sites become a "permanent fixture" Currently, they will take them by appointment so that the seats can be destroyed ASAP before recycling. Safety is the primary concern then the recycling is a bonus!

Glad to hear that. That is my biggest fear with recycling programs, that seats that should be destroyed are left out for an unknown time and are "free for the taking."
