Spin off- Pics of the Smart ForTwo

I went to check out the Smart ForTwo. It is made by Mercedes, but with a Mitsubishi motor. It has been for sale in Europe for 12 years now and came to the states in January. When it came to the states, they lengthened it slightly to put an extra beam in the door and they switched the Mercedes motor with a mitsubishi one.

The model I looked at was the Passion. It is the upgraded version. The starter version is the Pure. The pure has non power windows, no radio, that is where I stopped listening. The passion has power windows, radio, power side mirrors and a sunroof, kind of. It doesn't open, but it is nice. If you want power steering, you need to upgrade, then you get leather seats and heated mirrors. I drove it, and I really don't feel I need power steering with as small of a wheel base as it has.

Here it a pic of the inside. It has more leg room than the Mercedes SUV.

I am 5'7", mostly leg. I keep my 2000 Windstar seat all the way back, but in the ForTwo, I had extra room.

The car has four air bags. Two in the front, and one in each seat. It gets very good crash test ratings. For more info on safety. Go to http://www.smartusa.com/smart-fortwo-passive-safety-features.aspx

The passenger seat tether is a little different than usual. You thread the tether through a loop at the top of the seat and hook at the bottom.

I was amazed that I could fit the Apex in the seat. It fit perfectly.

Of course, the air bag went off when I installed the seat. I wish there was a way to turn the air bag off, by key, but there isn't.

The car averages in the high 30's for gas mileage and has a 3 cylinder engine that weighs 175 lbs. The sides are plastic skins that can be swtiched out. So if you get tired of the color, just buy new skins for $1500. The waiting list is one year. With all the features I want, Blue skin, silver frame, I think it will probably cost about $14000. And here is a bonus pic of Bekah, not used to FF'ing, with her legs up, in the Windstar.

Yes, funny, but nice! It has a lot of stuff you find in a Mercedes, but affordable! One thumb down for the sales person though. He thought that Bekah would be in a booster! I said no, she just turning FF'ing!

Oh Judi, you ROCK! Thank you so much for posting pics!

I can't imagine ever buying this car for myself, but I love all things practical, and this would be the perfect car for my sister to use commute to work!

Aaahhh, I want one! :p I'm not sure if I could get over my fear of H being in the front, though. But it would be SO NICE to be able to make the round-trip to Portland or Dallas for less than $15!

They just came out in the states?? They've been here for at least a year.. if not longer!

No they didn't *just* come out I would say they have been here about a year. There is a dealership in the next town over (drive by all the time) that sells them and they have had them for about a year or so.

Thanks! I am trying to find a way to afford it. I will have one year, from when I put the $99 down.

I was nervous about the air bags too, but there is a huge ammount of room between the passenger and the dash. The foot room is huge. The seats slat up. I am thinking that would minimize submarining.

When my husband wrecked our car, I was talking to the Police officer giving him the kids stats, and first, with Lexi, he double takes "Oh, she's RF how much does she weigh?" and then with Kamille, after telling him that she was in the middle (lap only) position, he then asked "and was she in a booster or just the seatbelt?"

That looks really cool! Thanks for sharing.

I like it too. I want to start doing a lot of ebay to see if I can afford it. I would have a year to the money aside, but I barely make that much as it is!

I thought they were so funny when I first started seeing the odd one here or there, but I see them more often around the city now and am always jealous at the small parking spots they fit in to.

That's too cool about the top tether anchors. Does it have lower anchors too, or would it be exempt?

I saw 2 of them sharing a parking meter in downtown Vancouver last spring ;) . We've had them up here for a few years now. When our local dealership was first promoting them they had a picture of it in the back of a 3/4 ton truck. Excellent on fuel, but the poor thing would get lost in the potholes on our roads  .
