Clueless about boosters

We are going to be flying out of town in a couple of months and doing a lot of driving at our destination so I need to figure out seats for the kids in the rental car. Neither of them fall asleep in the car and all of the driving will be day trips for a couple of hours.

My 8 year old is about 50 in. and 58 lbs and is currently in the Britax Frontier. It’s probably time for him to get a backless booster so I was thinking of buying him one now to travel with. Any recommendations?

The 5 year old is in a Recaro Sport and she is about 49 lbs. I’m not as sure of her height but she’s somewhere between 42-46 in. I’m not as sure about her. Is she ready for a backless or a low back booster? What would be the safest for her and convenient for traveling?

Is she booster ready? If so, she can use a backless. As long as there's no timezone change or early/late flights so you think sleeping is more likely, you can use a backless for them. The Harmony Youth Booster or BubbleBums may be nice. Or a Cosco Rise.

How do you know if they’re booster ready? She seems to sit very well without slouching and never sleeps in the car. The plane ride is 5-6 hours but not a late flight. They’ve never flown before and are very excited to so I don’t think there’s any chance of sleeping.

Will they sit properly 100% of the time, even when asleep (in the car, you can't use a booster on a plane)? Will they leave the belt buckled? Not lean around or slump or turn?

Your eight year old is already using the Frontier as a booster, yes? So when you felt the eight year old was trustworthy in a booster, same thing for the five year old.

At her age and size there's no evidence of such. But there are also zero studies between harnesses and boosters. All we have is post crash data.

Just be very sure she won't sleep or spaz out in a booster. :) I'd hate to have you guys far from home to find out she's not booster ready. I'd try it out before you go.
