What infant seats fit an average size baby from birth?

I don't know what "average" is--let's say 7 pounds? I've heard some seats like some Gracos and the BabyTrend seats don't (harness slots tend to be too high).

I am trying to give a friend good info on what infant seats really fit from birth, but I haven't been in the market for one in a while, and so many more seats exist (it seems!). Is there some sort of master list?

Ones that typically fit newborns well (and come with padding) are:
Newer Graco seats (the old ones did not. The new ones do)
Key fit
Britax
Comfy carry (look for front adjust)

Baby Trend and the Graco Snugride (22/no number/Classic Connect, all the same seat described different ways) do not.

The Combi Shuttle is a little high too.

Otherwise, no problem.

I've personally used the Chicco KeyFit 30 and it was wonderful for my 8.5 pounder. I've even put my daughter's 14 inch doll in it and the fit was really nice. I believe there are many reviews on this site regarding the different brands/models of infant car seats. Perhaps you could point your friend to it so she could do her research.

The keyfit 30 fit my 6 pounder very nicely at birth, the infant insert you use really helps, I took it out after he hit 12 pounds and I was amazed at how much of a difference it made. Do avoid the Graco Snugride 22, I had that for my first because it had the cutest patterns but it wasn't a good fit now that I know about car seat safety. The Snugride 30/32/35/40 are all fine tho.

I would refer her to the Recommended Car Seats by the CarSeat Blog, its not an all inclusive list of every car seat that would work from birth, but its a great place to start researching.

We had a Keyfit that fit my (small) daughter very nicely at birth - she was just under 5 pounds and 17.5" long. I loved that seat!
