The commonest, truly bad advice about skid control that one sees in America -- including the fact that it is included in some state drivers' manuals -- is: "If you skid, select neutral." This, frankly, is diabolical and for anyone naive enough to believe it, it should be followed by the phrase: "Now contort yourself and kiss the rear end of your anatomy goodbye!"

I have so many people tell me that older cars are better because they are tanks and hardly have any damage in a crash. The new cars are tin cans and crumple up in a crash so they are a lot more dangerous and poorly built. They don't want to listen to the fact that new cars are supposed to crumple up so the energy is absorbed by the car, not your body. SO frustrating!

Every time I hear that I pull up YouTube on my phone and show them 59 Bel Air vs 09 Malibu and ask what car they'd rather be in ;)

Yup- modern cars are both stronger AND crumple better. They simply didn't use high strength steels in autos back then and didn't have the computerized designs to make better safety cages.

I just point out that when I demo derby, it's strongly encouraged to wear a HANS device in those big steel tanks. Granted, we're trying to wreck, but it's at lower speeds and yup, you get tossed around.

Was in a friend's 2010 Outback that got t-boned at highway speeds and rolled 1 1/2 times. Had some very nasty bruises and glass cuts, but overall was less sore than derby.

My first car was a Ford Fiesta of the early 90s. We had an unfortunate run in with a loose cow. Dumb cow and I both walked away fine. Howard, the car, did not. Very interesting to see how the crumble zones went over the car but the actual cabin wasn't warped.

The Geo Metro convertible got ran over by a Hummer. Poor Jeffrey. What itty bitty trunk he had got turned into a pancake. Thankfully the top was down because that basically acted like a curb to the stupid Hummer.

I've had enough with odd accidents.
