There is no spot there I'm comfortable with, since I'm no longer comfortable with anything that anchors a seat that is in use.

What changed your mind? I haven't kept up with much in the way of advances in the past year. The last discussion I read discussed the crash forces peaking at different times.

They don't permit it, but if there's no one in the seat, or if I can tether to a point that is not in use for a seat at all but is structurally attached (I put my seat that RF tethered in the third row, and then I used the ring in the ground that anchors the second row seats when in the moved-in position, which I wasn't using, to thread my d-ring through) I'm ok with it.

The more I read about vehicle manufacturers' concerns, advanced airbags, etc., the less comfortable I am with ever putting a d-ring around a seat in use for another person just for the sake of rear-facing tethering a US seat.
