Which seat for travelling?

We are about to fly (~3 hr flight) and then drive 4-5 hours to our vacation destination. I'm curious what you experts think about our options for travel seats:

We have 3 kids and may need to fit 3 across in a rental car, although we hope to get one with a third row, which would make things easier.

DS1--7y2m, 54" and 68lbs. He uses Frontier 85 in booster and a Parkway at home, but we have a backless booster for him for travelling, which works fine.

DS2--4y2m, 44" and 46lbs. He uses a Regent and a Frontier (harnessed) at home. We have recently been bringing DD's Radian for him to use for travel, but we're likely going to use that for her this trip. I'd love to bring a backless booster for him, but he's never been booster trained and I have my doubts about his ability to sit still during the long car ride to our destination.

DD--2y7m, 37" and 31lbs. She uses the Radian (and sometimes the Frontier harnessed) at home. She used to use a sit and stroll for travel, but it expired in October.

So...do we take a frontier for DS2 and the Radian for DD or do we buy something new (cheap/light, ideally narrow) for use in travelling? Since DS2 is pretty husky and big for his age, we have been using the airplane seatbelt for him--we still carried the Radian on, but put it in overhead, since I wasn't crazy about checking it and it potentially getting damaged. If we were to bring a Frontier, can one use it on the plane (say, for DD)? I think I recall we could use the Radian on the plane (for DD). She was seated in the Sit and Stroll on the plane for the last trip.

If you don't think we can do a LBB for DS2 now, when do you think this would be possible (for travel only--we'd keep him in the above seats at home, and eventually shift the F85 to him after the Regent expires in the middle of this year).

Thanks so much for your help!

Hi there.

I wouldn't put a four year old in a backless booster, and definitely not with such a long drive as a first go. I'd save that for about six years old on vacation, and even then I'd be wary with a long drive ahead of you.

A Ride Safer Travel Vest type 2 may be an option for you, with the top tether in use in the car. It can be tucked in your carry on for the plane.

Another option would be the Harmony Defender. It's lightweight and narrow and long lasting. It's also $99 and has a 10 year lifespan. So that'd be pretty nice. Then bring that and the Radian and use the Radian for DD (if she is rear facing in the car, bring an angle adjuster and the rear facing foot).
