Renting a cares harness

I recently saw a post where someone recommended renting a cares harness for an infrequent (very rare) flyer.

I scratched my head a bit, and thought I'd ask: is renting a harness as bad as renting a car seat? We will be flying to FL and back. The last time we flew was 6 years ago. DS is 3 and is 39" and 40lbs. I'm in a tossup between doing a cares harness with a Safe Traffic 2 for the ride to the park and back and as a JIC in case we have to go anywhere OR getting a Maestro.

Many people have said you can't use a maestro on the shuttle and they throw it in with the luggage. Is the harness just as safe on a plane for a 40pound kid as a seat? And is it really ok to rent the cares? I would buy the safe traffic new.

It's made completely of webbing, no hard parts to be damaged, it's unlikely to get dirty and need cleaning, and it's less likely to actually do more than provide more comfort and support on the plane-if it does restrain them it would more likely be in turbulence than anything. That's why people are more ok with renting this than a car seat.

He's at a size where the seatbelt might tighten well in which case the CARES will work fine as long as he doesn't unbuckle. I used it for my daughter at a similar size at that age and it was fine.

If you're uneasy about renting from ”strangers” you could post in Swap here- several of us have them that we're usually willing toloan out. :)

A rear facing seat would be.

Forward facing there are a lot of factors.

As long as the belt fits I wouldn't worry about safety, honestly. Having a harness is safer than most people on the plane, who are already really super safe.
