Question open box deals--are they safe?

I've been reading like crazy on these forums (what a great resource!) and I've noticed many recommendations for nobetterdeal.com. When I go to that site, I see that many of the car seats for sale are from boxes that have been opened. There are similar seats for sale on e.g. Amazon warehouse deals.

Are these seats safe? If the condition is given as "like new," can we assume that they haven't been used?

I am okay buying a seat that is in an open box, however I thoroughly check it over and make sure the tags are still attached. I'm pretty sure sites like nobetterdeal buy returned items from places like amazon. If I were to get a seat that was in used condition ie. food crumbs, detached tags, missing pieces, I definitely would return it and not use it. That's my own comfort level and others may feel differently. Good luck!

I've bought several seats from NBD and they have always been new with the tags attached. Sometimes the box is beat up. I would definitely return it if it seemed used, I know people have occasionally gotten seats with crumbs or hair on them (gross!)

I think if you use nbd you have to be prepared for the possibility that you can't use it and have to send it back. IMO it's worth taking the chance for the good deal :)

My Nextfit still had tags and was still in its cardboard "nest" with sleeves on the latch. I've bought seats in-store that were more questionable :)

I've purchased a couple of seats that were returns. One was an online return at Target, all tags still attached to the seat. Same with the seat I ordered from Wayfair. With all the tags still attached and looking completely new I feel perfectly safe using the seats.

No better deal has changed their return policy. Now if you don't like it you can return 30 days from date of delivery, but they mean 30 days. I returned something at 34 days (due to c section) and guess what no refund even though they have the item and it was broken. With this in mind, the moment you open the item inspect it carefully. This is much easier to do with something that doesn't need to be assembled. They do not really look over items they sell and have resold the same thing that was returned as defective in the past. What you need to do is look at it for missing parts, any sign of wear, cracks. In a carseat with foam you need to take the cover off and look at the foam to see if it is cracked. 9/10 of the items I get at NBD are brand new still in plastic just the box was opened. That other one is dirty and missing parts sadly. Most people are fine with buying seats there if they appear new.
