17 month old undoing Graco buckle

My friend called me for advice about her 17 month old undoing the new crotch buckle and chest clip on his classic ride! I was completely surprised, is that a new record? Lol.

I advised her to try Velcro and car toys. She said she'll let me know what happens with the Velcro... Is there anything else that might help if that doesn't work?

I don't know if it is possible with the new buckles but I was told by Graco that I could flip the buckle around so the release was on the inside when ds2 was 18 months. That worked for him. Also cutting the toes off of a baby sock to slide around the chest clip worked great for keeping it buckled.

Wow! Now *that* is impressive! ;)

One of my co-workers has her 2 year old in a Classic Ride. She has problems with him unbuckling the chest clip. He wears shirts with buttons a lot so I told her to put one of those on him and button it over the harness. That won't help with the buckle though!

Thanks :) I hope she doesn't need these suggestions but I wanted to be able to offer her other advice if she called again!

I would not flip a buckle backward without talking to an engineer at Graco.

Button up shirt may deter, so may a mirror to see the kid. Make sure she's tightening properly-even over-tightening a bit.

I would have her call Graco to confirm. I sent her a link to the pinch test last night.

Yes, the chest clip has always been fairly easy to undo and I recommended Velcro or a button up shirt over the harness. My surprise was that he could do the crotch buckle too.

They live in Florida, I doubt he's wearing a coat to keep mittens on. I haven't heard back from her, she said she would call if Velcro didn't work. Poor little boy has always hated car seats- he screams the entire time he's buckled in, which is probably why he's so determined to get out.

I was thinking more putting really long socks over the mittens and up his arms. I actually told my cousin if her kid didn't stop escaping maybe she could just sew some mittens and/or socks to a long sleeved shirt so the kid would have to get the entire shirt off to use her hands.
