Problems with Odyssey's seat belt and the high back booster

So I finally switched my oldest daughter to a HBB shortly after her 6th birthday. We immediately started having trouble with the seat belts of our 2002 Honda Odyssey. Every time she sits in it, she has to unthread the entire thing and start over. She can't do this herself, so we're back there buckling her in. Are we doing something wrong?

I wound up sending the booster back and buying a Britax Frontier which I'm not completely sure about either (separate thread!)

I would like her to be able to sit in a HBB but it's a major PITA with our seat belts unless there's something we're doing wrong.

Which seating position is she in? Is she pulling it all the way out, causing it to lock? What booster is she using?

Emma at first occasionally locked the belt by accident but it hasn't been an issue since I showed her how to pull the slack into the lap portion and make sure she didn't pull the shoulder portion all the way out. She's in the captain's chair of our '05.

Sounds like she is pulling the belt all the way out when buckling or unbuckling and switching the retractor. It took years of practice before my kids could buckle themselves in their boosters reliably.

We have a 2002 oddy as well and a monterey and parkway in the rear and a monterey in the inner captains chair. No real issues except the three across buckling troubles. So I am guessing "user error" somehow.

We just traded in our 02 Ody, but here are some tips for HBB in it.

If she is sitting in the second row center, the seatbelt is going to be stretched farther to reach that seat. Different seating positions have different belt geometry, so they will be better or worse. In order from best to worst self-buckling a HBB (IMO): passenger side second row, third either outboard, second row driver, second row center third row center.

In the second row, sliding the captain's chair all the way back will also give more belt length to work with.

The specific HBB can make a difference as well. Our old-style Parkways were much less likely to lock up than the Monteray.

You can practice with her on how much belt to pull out and how to hold it with one hand while buckling with the other.
