backless booster for ASD 7 year old

My 7 year old with Aspergers needs a backless booster or a very lightweight highback booster to take with him on a camp van this summer.

He currently rides in a Parkway SGL and a Frontier80 converted to a highbackbooster. Both have anti-submarine straps to help keep tantrums from turning into an issue.

First my husband was wondering if it's okay to keep using the anti-submarine straps if we convert either of those seats to a backless booster.

Second we were wondering about dedicated backless boosters, are there any inexpensive ones that are considered a little more secure than others? (in terms of keeping the seat belt from being pulled out of place and in terms of just feeling more secure to the child...more "surrounding"?).

We were also wondering about padding and other sensory issues, he likes the Britax seats but we were hoping for the camp seat to get something less pricey and lighter. The Britax seats are the only ones that have the anti-submarine straps though, correct? He is very worried about going to a backless booster but the lightness issue is a big concern, so I did say I'd also check if any high backed boosters are super lightweight and easy to move. It has to be light enough for his aide to move easily from van to van, she complained last year when we only had the parkway about the weight.

If something comes in RED that is a big plus.

You cannot convert a Frontier to a backless. :) The SG strap can be used with the Parkway in backless mode.

Backless boosters aren't going to feel very enclosing no matter what you do. The BubbleBum does have non-conventional clips that keep the lapbelt VERY low and keep it from being pulled out- but they have those because they have no arms/sides. Plus it's "squishy" compared to other boosters (because it's filled with memory foam and air!) so I'm not sure how he'd like that.

There are a lot of boosters that are actually pretty lightweight out there. The Harmony high-back comes to mind. The Graco TurboBooster is lightweight and positions well in almost all vehicles- but is notorious for falling apart when picked up and not intuitive to put back together.

Just to check- you've made sure the van will have lap/shoulder belts and headrests, right? Otherswise, that changes things as far as safety with a booster.

We won't know for absolute sure what the van has until the day before camp starts, they rent a new van each year, but I'm assuming it will be the same or similar to last year's van which did have the right belts and headrests...he rode in his parkway booster last year but the aide complained about having to move the heavy seat and having no place to store it, and this year we need that booster to be in one of the cars. We may wait to actually buy something til we see the van the first day to be certain about the belts and headrests. He won't be the only one in a booster seat though, just the rest of the kids (1st grade and up) all have backless boosters.

We saw an evenflo high-back booster at Baby's R Us last night, that seemed to be extremely light weight, does anyone find that one difficult to fit or use? (It had a lot of red on it, hence a good possible option ;) )
