Primo Viaggio SIP 2011 in a 2008 City Jetta - bracing handle?

We've looked through the instructions and it shows the allowed handle positions, but it doesn't say if the handle can touch the back of the front passenger seat when it's in the hood position. Anyone know if it can? Thanks!

I thought that Canadian seats had to have the handle forward, toward the feet perhaps? I'm remembering Trudy saying something about Canadian Pegs having this requirement from last year.

I will look for the Transport Canada notice but I am pretty sure that if the handle is touching the front seat that you must opt to rotate the handle towards the baby's feet instead.

You can have it at the feet or at the hood. If we put the handle at the feet, it doesn't just rest against the rear seat back. We have to push it pretty firmly. Right now, with the handle at the hood, the handle touches the back of the passenger seat, but I think if I adjust the recline on the front seat and make it more upright, the handle won't touch. I just finished scouring my car's manual in both the airbag section and the child safety section, and I couldn't find anything about the handle touching the front seat. Grrrrr.

When was your seat made? If it falls in the dates covered by that notice, then it can't be touching the front seat. You either need to move the passenger seat up a bit, or rotate the handle to the foot of the infant seat.

Thank you! It was manufactured in 2011, so it's not included, but that still gave me the information that I need. The Peg instructions show both safe handle positions, but don't really explain why you would use one over the other. Given that, even if I do straighten the back of the passenger seat, the handle will still be close to the back of the seat, I think the foot position of the handle would be better.

If I'm not mistaken, the original change came after some testing. The foot position is considered to assist with rebound management. If the handle is directly above baby on the seats that the statement was issued for, it could cause injury. At the top of the shell, it was less likely to cause injury.

But, new regulations would take care of rebound management, correct Trudy?

You don't have to lock it in to position against the vehicle seatback. All the manual says is that it should be resting against the vehicle seatback - in some vehicles this means that the handle is between positions - but the position that it locks towards is still slightly tilted forward - it's not the straight up one.

The original change came about due to some research testing - basically if the handle was in the "down" position at the top of the shell, and close to the vehicle seat in front of it, it could be pushed out of the locked position by the front seat and create the risk of a child's head impacting the handle. So the notice indicated to place the handle at the baby's feet in the rebound position if it was touching the front vehicle seat when in the other allowed position.

I would still follow this guideline with a 2011 Peg - if it's touching the front vehicle seat then put it in the rebound position at the child's feet.

The 2011 Peg seats were all compliant to the 2012 change of standards. They still allowed the option of "head" or "rebound" position. It's the 30/30 pegs that will require the rebound position.

Good to know. The instructions as well as the illustrations on the handle seem to indicate that it should be locked into one of the proper positions.
