I have a 2010 Ford Focus. I have a baby girl due in March and a son, who will be 4 in March. My son is currently in a convertible seat (Maxi Cosi Priori), which he still fits fine in, but the cushion is coming apart (batting everywhere) and it is rather wide, so I'm looking to move him up to a booster (probably a harness one). I am having a hard time finding one and the stores never seem to carry more than 4 harness boosters apiece, so most of my looking has been online.
My son is on the small side. He weighs about 31 lbs and is about 39 inches tall, so I think a harness is the safest way to go for now. I'd like to not have to buy another booster for him in a year or 2, so I want this one to last him awhile as he grows, so it should convert to belt-positioning. My daughter will be using a Baby Trend Flex Loc Infant Seat once she arrives.
I really want to leave one of the side seats open in the back, so I want to be able to have one of the car seats in the middle. The leg room in the back of a Focus is really short, so I was thinking I might want my son in the middle. That is where he is now and his feet sit on the front seat armrest. I'm afraid that if we put him on the side, his legs would be cramped and he would not be able to avoid kicking the seat constantly. If a booster might allow his legs to hang down lower, instead of sticking out like in the convertible, I could look at putting him on the side, but my initial thought was to have the baby on the side and him in the middle. However, I also haven't tried to see how far up I'll need to put the passenger seat in order to fit a baby seat in rear-facing. We got this car after we'd switched my son to forward facing, so that will be new.
Essentially, I need advice on a harness booster (combination seat) that is narrow enough to fit beside an infant seat in a Ford Focus (leaving an open seat for a skinny adult). I have seen the name Radian mentioned a lot as a narrow seat, but does it use Latch? I read somewhere that it was very difficult to install. I would much rather use a seat that has Latch.
Also my son does tend to fall asleep on car trips (it's the only way he'll nap outside of day care), so I need a seat where he won't have his head fall forward when he's sleeping, which I've heard is an issue with certain boosters. I'd rather spend under $200, if possible, but I'm open to more if that's the only way.
Please help. My husband is very frustrated that I am spending so much time on this and I still don't know what to get.
