Question rear facing seat safety - lap belt only

I sent my son off in the carpool this morning and didn't know until the last minute that he the rear-facing seat only offered a lap belt (Eurovan). Is this considered safe? I have always been adamant about not using the lap belt only spot in my van but it is forward facing.

How old and heavy is your son? Is he riding in just a seatbelt, or a booster or harnessed seat?

In a frontal collision his back will be safe from the seat, but there will be no rebound control. So I would imagine he's at a slightly less, but still sizable, risk for spinal and head injuries.

Are you referring to a rear-facing VEHICLE seat? My mom's Eurovan has those seats, with a lap-only belt, and no you can never use them for a car seat. All US car seats require a forward-facing vehicle seat. In addition, the seatbelts on those RF vehicle seats are ELR lap-only belts.
