expiration date

Hi, i'm going to be a new dad :)
so a friend of ours gave us a brand new car seat about 4 yrs ago and it's still in the box and never used. it's been stored in a dry, cool place.
I've read that there are expiration dates on car seats and in general a car seat should not be used for more than 5 yrs of manufacture date. I can understand the reasoning of that with the UV and the stress on the car seat but if it's never been used, would it still be safe to use it?

Depending on the brand, most are good for at least 6 years.

Can you give us more information about it? There are always changes in the carseat world, and there are recalls that need to be looked into before saying whether or not the seat is still safe for use.

A four year old car seat (from date of manufacture, not date of purchase) is safe and legal.

However, not all car seats are good for newborns, even if they're rated for newborns, and car seat quality has improved drastically in recent years. Can you tell us the make and model of seat?

I have nothing new to add but noticed that this part got missed in the technical details. ;)
