Installing Safeguard in Odyssey Center seat with belt

HI everyone, we were trying tonight to install our Safeguard into the 2005Honda Odyssey we just bought via the seatbelt instead of LATCH because I think we're at the weight limits already. My hope was to keep her in the captain's chair moved into the center position away from the door, but my husband had no luck at all getting it in there tight. We read the instructions, and he tried what he could think of, but it is moving all over the place. Any suggestions? Is it not possible to keep her away from the door and get a good install? Any help or ideas would be great. He tried reclining the seat, and using the shoulder belt lock, etc, with no luck. Thanks in advance,
Jill

The Go seat can be used to 65 pounds with LATCH. They tested it that way and because the seat is so light it is okay.

Are you installing the Safeguard seat or the safeguard GO? I thought you meant the first but the pp thought the latter.

Well, now that I got that cleared up, I'm not sure that I can be of help. Did you try installing the seat with the cars seat reclined and then pushing it up into the CRS? I'm not familiar with the Odyssey (sorry I have a Sienna) but did you try the Oddyssey owners website? I know that toyota has one and they have online forums where I'm sure someone would know. Try googleing honda woners club.

Hi Jill,
Yes, I have the same problem with our '05 Odyssey. I tried to install my dd's Roundabout ff'ing in that seat and had a hard time getting it installed well. Some of the techs on here might have some good techniques for you, but here are a couple I found that helped. Try moving that seat forwards or backwards. The positioning might change the install. Also, are you using the retractor within the seatbelt? If not then try that also. Good luck!

He tried reclining the seat, but I don't think he tried moving the seat itself forward or back. We'll try again tonight for a longer time after he gets home from work. We were in a hurry to get somewhere last night and the weather was bad, so we just put it back in with LATCH and we'll work on it again tonight. I was just hoping some folks would have some tips that would work so that we could keep it in the center. Thanks! I think my husband knows where the Odyssey forums are, so we can look there as well.

Darren has an Ody and a Safeguard...try the 'carseat reviews' section up above, search back a couple months or a year, he didn't have any problems, that I can recall (he might be the one to post at odyclub if you ask, anyway, lol).

Ugh, I just read the two threads he wrote and it seems he had a harder time getting a decent install via the seatbelt in the Odyssey. Wonderful. I think I'm really going to have to find an expert because we're at a loss as to how to get it in there tigher aside from trying what another poster suggested of trying to install it with LATCH first, then putting the belt through and then releasing the LATCH to see if it holds tighter. Thanks for pointing me that way....

Were you able to get this installed? I did one today and really didn't have any trouble with it. I reclined the vehicle seat first. Then, the key to getting it tight is to pull the shoulder portion of the seat belt right next to the buckle. If you need to, you can get into the seat to put some weight into it, but I prefer to use my left hand to push down on the side of the seat next to where the buckle is while pulling the seat belt tight. Then, once the seat belt is tight, hold it with your right hand and reach around with your left hand and grab the shoulder belt with your left hand. Slide the belt up into the lockoff. Raise the vehicle seat back upright and attach the tether. It should be quite snug.

Thanks for your reply. We actually realized that our daughter had more time to use the LATCH installation, so we put it back in the center position of the car with LATCH. From the other feedback received, it seemed that we had a decent install, as it really doesn't move along the belt path. Others have said that as long as that is secure, any movement of the seat bottom forward is not dangerous, just annoying. So when the time comes, we'll reinstall it that way with the belt and have it looked at by a tech to make sure it's ok. I had to jiggle it a lot to get it to move, so it may just have been that we're trying too hard.

Yeah, it all depends on where you grab the seat. The further away from the belt path you wiggle, the more it's going to move. If you really yank on any seat, it's going to move at the belt path, but just a nice tug is all you need to do. :)

Doesnt the Odyssey have a LATCH weight limit of 40 lbs of child regardless of the LATCH limit on the seat? Please correct me if I am wrong! I have an 03 Ody and two Marathons for my twin boys who just turned 2. I was thinking I would be able to use LATCH until 48 lbs (the MA LATCH limit). But now I am thinking 40 lbs weight limit then switch to seat belt install?

:thanx!:

Are your boys forward-facing or rear-facing?

My friend has a 2001 Oddy...and has trouble installing seats in the captain's chair in the center position. It seems like b/c there is nothing attaching the lap belt closer to the seat--it comes from the side of the vehicle across--that it makes it more difficult to get a tight install in that position. Don't know if the newer Oddy's have a buckle that clips the lap belt portion down at the side of the captains chair when it's in the center position, but I know that is how it works in my Villager.

From what I was told from a few people, including the folks at Safeguard, it is a no-go to be able to install a seat in the center position of the car for the reasons you stated. It just won't work to get a proper install. So we'll have to deal with an outboard install when the time comes. Disappointing, but what can you do?

Have you tried? With the lockoff in that seat, it should get everything clamped ok, and there's no data that a safely installed seat is of any risk to a child in that position.

It didn't matter how we locked it off, on the seat or with the belt, the base was nowhere near secure. It was flopping all over the place. Just the location of where the belt comes from and how far it had to travel, I don't know, it just wasn't even close and the folks at Safeguard said their notes showed it could not install in a captains chair moved into the center in the Odyssey.
