Broken foam in Britax Marathon?

Hi all! My friend just gave me a Britax Marathon that was used by her neighbors before they moved out of the country. Unfortunately, while en route to me via USPS, the foam that is located on the seat back between the plasic shell and the padding/cover snapped (horizontally, at the plastic button thing that holds the foam in place. It was still fitted in firmly like a puzzle, and I wouldn't have noticed had I not removed the cover to wash it.

So, my question is, is it still safe to use this seat? I would think no, but I'd hate to throw out a $270 seat if it isn't necessary. Or, does anyone know if this sheet of foam is something that Britax can replace for a fee? I'd call them myself, but they're closed, so I thought I'd check here to see if anyone has any insight or experience with this.

you can get new foam from Britax, just call them tomorrow. In the meanwhile, they've said before that it's ok to tape or glue it back together.

Wow. reading about this now has jogged my memory of many moons ago that I broke the foam while removing the cover. . .Before I knew anything of carseat safety- I glued it with super glue (it made an awful stink) it fit together really well and the super glue reacted somehow melting it together very strongly. I'm glad what I did wasn't way off base.

WOW! I am so happy to hear this!!! I thought I was going to have to toss our Marathon since the foam is cracked!!!! My husband has a perfect glue, he says, that will work perfect now that I have told him I read it can be glued!

This thread is from 2006 originally. I suggest calling Britax to make sure this is still their recommendation. A lot can change in a decade.

Update April 2021: I had the same problem. Britax confirmed today that you can put the foam back together with duct tape or call them to order a replacement piece of foam.
