britax seats touching

A friend of mine has a britax marathon 70 and a evenflo meastro side by side and we were wondering if they are allowed to be touching if that's going to cause too much stress on the shells.

They're fine to touch. You do have to check that they're tightly installed independent of each other - that is, if you remove one seat, the other remains tight. To check this, install seat #1 tightly (less than 1" of movement in any direction at the belt path). Then install seat #2 tightly. Then, remove seat #1 and make sure seat #2 is still tight. If seat #2 seemed tight but then wiggles when seat #1 is removed, that's a problem.
