5 yo plane and rental car question

I'm having a hard time deciding what I should do, I have a 5yo 53 pounds current in a harnessed seat radian and nautilus in our cars and occasionally in a highback booster in grandmas car. Not really booster trained but just a few blocks to school. We're getting ready to visit some friends can't decide if I should lug my radian through the airport use it on plane and rental car or get a high back booster and check it. I've read you shouldn't check car seats but would booster be less risky? I def don't want to check my radian but I don't know that he ready needs it in the plane.

Any advice? Buy a booster and check or deal with carrying the radian?

I'd probably just use a booster seat. You can pack the back in your luggage amongst your clothes for padding. Take the seat part on the plane as a carry on. Work on booster training before you go. If you see it's not going to work you can always change plans at the last minute. Also, if adults will be sitting back there with him they can usually give the reminders to keep him properly seated.

Thanks for the advice. If I can't get the back part in my suite case what do you think about checking it? I'm packing both of our stuff in 1 suite case so we're going to be packing pretty light already.

How long will the car rides be when you're on vacation? Is he likely to fall asleep at any point?
