cleaning vomit from a carseat

I have a Cosco Alpha Omega. My son is 2 and he threw up in it yesterday. We cleaned the straps as well as we could with baby wipes first and then we used clorox wipes. The seat is still stinky. I used some soapy water too and it sitll stinks. I need to figure out how to take the cover off and the straps so I can either wash them in the washer or by hand. I can't find my user manual. I did go to their website and ordered one but who knows when I will get it. I am so upset about it that I went and bought the $40 Cosco Scenera to use until we can clean the other one.

Argg, I hate carseats and strollers, they are so complicated to unassemble and reassemble!!!!

Thanks in advance for any advise on how to clean it up.

The AOE is pretty easy to take apart but you're going to need a screwdriver. I've had mine completely apart and hosed it with a garden hose so it can be done. First undo the straps from the little gold piece that hooks to your harness adjuster underneath. Oh wait you have to take the base off first, there's a metal bar that runs through the base and the seat. There's a tab on the base, push it down and use a screwdriver to push the metal rod through from the other side. Once its out a little grab it and pull it all the way out and voila your base is off. Once you've unhooked your harness from the adjuster just pull on side and it comes right out. Then the cover itself shouldn't be attached in anyway and you can just pull it off and around the shoulder height adjuster. If he threw up on that part then that's where you need the screwdriver. There should be screws in the back that attach it to the carseat, just unscrew those and it will come off. Then you can wash the whole thing. HTH

Buy new straps. You shouldn't use them after using such harsh cleaners on them, the fibers could be weakened and they may fail in a crash.

I'm glad you took my advice and came here to ask! Sorry I couldn't help you out though!

And I just realized you are from my birth board (December 2004), lol, I didn't recognize your name!

Check the manual ~ you can likely machine wash the cover (may have to line dry) ... but you will need to replace the harness straps if a simple wet rag doesn't do the trick

I feel for you. I had the stupid AO and my dd always got carsick. Sadly the seat and manual are long-gone and I can't remember how to get the cover off. I do remember that a screwdriver was involved.

I didn't know any better at the time and machine-washed my harness straps. Luckily we were never in a crash.

Machine wash the cover, hopefully your new straps won't take long to arrive.

Oops, my response sounded way rude. I didn't catch you had already planned to order straps, I skimmed and interpreted as you were looking for another cleaner that would work. doh. Nevermind me. Sorry I don't know a thing about the cover.

How do you like the Scenera?

Haven't tried it, but I wonder what a paste of baking soda would do for odor/stain removal? That wouldn't be harsh. You could wipe/rinse the harness after the baking soda had set for a bit.

Was going to try it (see prior post re Britax Harness), but new harness coincidentally arrived at that moment. {what luck!}

Thank you all for your responses.

Mominabigtruck, that really doesn't sound easy, LOL. But I will have my husband do it this weekend and I will order the new straps, I had not ordered them yet.

RubysGirl, Oh I didn't think your response was rude at all! I actually didn't plan on ordering new straps but I guess if clorox wipes are too harsh I will have to get them. My child's safety is definitely a priority here, what I ordered was a manual.

About the Scenera, we actually used it today for 2 minutes literally, my son seemed to like it, he was excited about a new seat. It is definitely easier to unassemble than the AO.

Sam, I can't believe you didn't know it was me, Ian's mommy, you terrible friend, LOL!!!!!
