Yet another question - thethering?

I read you HAVE to tether FF seats?! When I read my Regent manual it looked to me like it was saying you didn't have to tether unless it was installed with a lap belt or LATCH (I did NOT have it tethered when I had it installed with a shoulder belt). I thought the same was true of the Radian. I'm asking because for some reason Chrysler decided it wasn't necessary to put 3 tether points on the back bench of my van, there's only 1. I want all 3 seats on the back bench (seat belt installed) but when all 3 kids are FF there's no way to have all 3 tethered.

Seats pass minimum safety standards without being tethered, and it's not the law (except for the Regent after 50 pounds), but they can increase safety quite a bit and they are always a good idea to use when you can (I agree, the planners behind your van need a swift kick in the you-know-where for only giving you one anchor in the third row :p)

Can you get extra tether anchors retrofitted in your van? My '99 Ford Explorer didn't have any tether anchors, but my local dealership did install some in the rear cargo area at my request. I don't think they even charged me for it either.....

I doubt it but I can try if I need to. Of course I THINK we have the car seat thing worked out finally so we can have all seats in tetherable positions. :)

If your vehicle is newer than '98, it should be doable. If you give the year, make and model, someone here can give you the "anchor kit" number / service bulletin info you'll need to tell your dealer (if your dealer is playing 'dumb').

The standard w/o tether is 32" of forward movement. Tethered, the seat can not move more than 28." That 4 inches is the difference between smashing into the seat back and not in many vehicles.

Tether retrofits are available for much older vehicles than '98 models; my understanding is that most vehicles, especially sedans, can be retrofitted from about the '86 (yes, they've made spots for tethers without the bolts installed since about 20 yrs ago). However, there are sometimes locations in the vehicle that can't have tether anchors added.
