Question ACCIDENT

I know someone who was in a accident 2 months ago. He is telling me that the carseat does not need to be thrown out. I have read and heard that even if the car was going 5-60 mph the seat needs to be destroyed. Please any techs answer this question.
Also what is the weight/height before a child can be turned around?

Most carseats must be replaced after any crash. A few (Britax, and maybe Sunshine Kids?) allow the seat to still be used if it meets the NHTSA guidelines.....
1- Car was able to be driven away
2- Airbags did not deploy
3- No one in the car was injured
4- door closest to the carseat was not damaged
5- the carseat shows no visual signs of damage

A crash must meet ALL of those guidelines to still be used.

Children should remain rear facing at least until 2 years, and preferrably longer. They need to have 1 inch of seat shell above their head, and be within the RF weight limit for the seat (30-40 pounds)

I was just recently in an accident.
My seat appears fine and there was no child in it at the time of the crash.

However, all techs have confirmed that because I was in a crash with enough force to give my neck whiplash, the seat cannot be guaranteed safe any longer. (And I just bought the damn seat a week before!)
I am going to call Graco, however, and see what they say as well. They know the seat the best.

My car would probably pass the "test" spoken of above...the seat was in the middle and I was not hit in the door. I drove home in the same car. I did go to the ER later, but with whiplash injuries. No airbags went off...
However...cars can also have hidden damage, just like seats can. My frame is likely bent, and the car will be totaled. This was from just a rear-end accident, too!

There is a good chance that your friends seat can be replaced by the insurance company involved...assuming he claimed it as property in the accident. Was a cop at the scene? Cops should ALWAYS note if there are child seats involved, as they are considered safety devices for the vehicle AND your property involved in the crash.
Your friend should call the carseat company!

FYI - Sunshine Kids does not allow the seat to be used after any accident. Their manual states, "Do not use restaint after it has been involved in any accident. Damage to the restraint may have occured which could impair its ability to adaquately protect a child."

Thank you. I knew someone would come and correct me. Is Britax the only one that follows the NHTSA guidelines.... for some reason I'm thinking there was a second company

There have been a few instances where people on here have been told by Learning Curve/True Fit customer service reps that their seats were ok to use after an accident. Although the stories I've read about those particular examples, I would be replacing the seats. I don't think it's official policy, though, because I think other people have actually been sent brand new seats by LC/TF for no charge because of an accident.
