You probably heard about the car crash that killed Anaheim (er--Los Angeles ) Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two other people. One of the passengers survived, but suffered internal decapitation.
The front page of today's Orange County Register had an article on internal decapitation, the surgery necessary to correct it, how 95% of people die at the scene, etc. Very interesting stuff. Read it here.
The graphic included online isn't quite as elaborate as the one in the paper, but still good. Only downside: It says internal decapitation occurs when there's an impact to the head--not from the head flying forward violently BECAUSE of an impact.
BTW, as you'll see if you read the article, the passenger, Jon Wilhite, is making an amazing recovery! He even threw out the first pitch at a baseball game recently (video of it can be seen on the site). Still not something that anyone would want to go through, though.
